Carol-Ann MacDonald was able to climb on the podium for the three cross-country races she attended this fall, and she expects to run well in the most important race of the season, the Atlantic University Sport Championship this Saturday in Halifax.

The women will cover an 8 km distance and the men 10 km in Point Pleasant Park at 12 p.m. and 12:45 p.m., respectively. The Dalhousie University Tigers are the host. MacDonald has two third and a first position this fall. MacDonald won the AUS bronze medal last year.

“I am looking to finish as high as possible,” MacDonald stated. “I will begin slowly and pick up speed in each kilometre until the eighth. I am nervous because of my first-place finish in Moncton. I am also excited. There will be very good competition, and I expect a group of six runners will battle all the way. The last kilometre will decide which runner is the strongest. I will decide my strategy during the race.”

Nassim Bousmaha has been the top Aigles Bleus runner in three races and rookie David Basque in the fourth. “We will all do our best in this race,” Bousmaha said. “It is the only race that counts and we expect to finish strong. This is my third AUS, and I aim for a top 15 finish. I have the skills do it.”

“This is the moment we have been waiting for,” said coach Jean-Marc Doiron. “After the training and the first four races, we have two healthy teams ready to face the Point Pleasant Park course. It should be exciting with eight teams in each category.”

The Aigles Bleues will do all they can to best their fourth place in the team standings last year. “It could happen because of the talented rookie Sophie Black and the progress of veterans Myriam Cormier, Myriam Cyr and December Sampson. We are also expecting a strong finish from Carol-Ann MacDonald, who should return to the podium for an athlete of her calibre.”

The men Aigles Bleus aim to finish higher than last season’s seventh place. “We have better runners than in 2017 and fewer injuries,” Doiron added. “We should be able to climb in the team standings. Nassim Bousmaha could surprise. If he runs disciplined in the first half of the race, he could run close to the lead pack.”

Sophie Black, Myriam Cormier, Myriam Cyr, Laurence Guitard, Émilie Guthrie, Carol-Ann MacDonald, Pascale Richard and December Sampson will be the Aigles Bleues at the start line of the 8 km race. In the men’s race, the Aigles Bleus runners in the 10 km distance will be David Basque, Nassim Bousmaha, Simon Delorme, Christian Haché, Alexandre Leclair, Vincent Leclair and Jeremy Role.
