Soccer Aigles looking to keep hopes alive with two games

With three games remaining in the regular schedule, the Université de Moncton teams will play two this weekend in Atlantic University Sport soccer action.

The Aigles Bleues (1-8-1=3 points, 10th position) will travel to Halifax on Friday to meet the Saint Mary’s University Huskies (4-4-1=13 points, 5th position) at 5 p.m. The Aigles Bleus (2-7-0=6 points, 8th position) will then play the men’s team (3-3-3=12 points, 6th position) at 7:15 p.m. Sunday, the Moncton teams will host the Memorial University Sea Hawks, at 1 p.m. (women: 3-2-3=12 points, 6th position) and 3:15 p.m. (men: 1-4-3=6 points, 7th position) at Stade Moncton Stadium. All these teams are battling for a playoff spot reserved for the top six teams in the final standings.

“The team is not in the position it had hoped at the beginning of the season,” said coach Mehyar Zékaroui. “We are going to play these two games with a win mentality. The scenario is out of our hands, but we will fight. We did lead the play in the first encounter with the Huskies, but we did not win. It will be different this time.”

“We are capable of winning both games,” added men’s coach, Florian Ntima Nsiemi. “We need to find the right ingredients to win a game on the road. We want to get the maximum six points to remain in contention for the AUS championship. The Sunday game should prove interesting.”

Player Alban Akapo could play this weekend after missing most of the season with an injury.
