Highlight of the April 14 Board of Governors meeting

Adoption of the 2018-2019 budget

The Université de Moncton Board of Governors adopted a budget allowing for an additional investment of $4.1 million in 2018-2019. Close to three quarters of this investment (72%) targets the area of instruction and support services, to improve the student experience.

This investment is made possible by a projected increase in revenue between 2017-2018 and 2018-2019 that will reach 3.8%, or close to $4.1 million. It is the biggest increase recorded in recent years.

“This revenue increase in the 2018-2019 budget is primarily due to a projected increase in enrollments over the 2017-2018 year and an increase in operational funding from the provincial government, as well as, to a lesser extent, a 2% tuition increase compared with the 2017-2018 budget,” indicated the interim president and vice-chancellor, Jacques Paul Couturier.

Projected enrollment growth is largely due to the recruitment efforts of recent years and the establishment of provincial tuition relief programs.

Despite income growth, Université de Moncton will present a deficit budget for 2018-2019. The projected deficit of the Université is $306,000, or 0.3% of the budget. “Adequate operational funding is required, so that teaching quality is not compromised and to fully pursue our research and community service activities. The current financial position also directly impacts our ability to achieve budgetary balance,” Mr. Couturier went on to say.

“In spite of our financial challenges, we continue to prioritize university access, by offering one of the lowest tuition fees of the publicly-funded universities of New Brunswick and of the other Maritime Provinces. We intend to review our tuition fees over the course of next year. The results of this review will be presented to the Board of Governors during the next budget approval process,” concluded Mr. Couturier.

In 2017-2018, Université de Moncton tuition fees were lower than the average, for New Brunswick’s publicly-funded universities, by approximately $944 per academic year. At the current rate, the gap in tuition between Université de Moncton and the other publicly-funded, English-language universities of New Brunswick is expected to grow in the coming years.
