Université de Moncton Aigles Bleus (3-19-2=8 points, 7th position) will be playing two games, and attempting to get closer to the sixth position in Atlantic University Sport men’s hockey action, this weekend.

Friday at 7 p.m., the Aigles Bleus will host University of Prince Edward Island Panthers (7-17-1=15 points, 5th position) at the J.-Louis-Lévesque Arena. On Saturday, the team will travel to Fredericton for a duel with the AUS second-place team, University of New Brunswick Varsity Reds (20-2-3=43 points). The Panthers were 3-2 winners over the Varsity Reds on Wednesday evening.

The Aigles Bleus stand five points behind Dalhousie University Tigers, in sixth and last position to qualify for the playoffs. The Panthers, Tigers and Aigles Bleus are battling for the last two spots, with five or six games left to play. The Tigers won 4-2 over the Huskies on Wednesday.

“These are very important games to decide our fate,” Moncton coach Judes Vallée said. “We are either going to close on the sixth spot or widen the point difference with the Tigers and Panthers. We have a possible 12 points left to win, so each shift and game is very important. Finding ways to win is important. Hope is still on our mind and we will battle until the end. We did put emphasis on special units this week. Our penalty kill did not work well last weekend, and our power play did not score goals that could have changed the nature of the games. The players are still dedicated and are not abandoning. Practice sessions and games are still positive. Our wish is to create a surprise for the playoffs. We will also give the Varsity Reds a good game.”

“We need to play our game and get some points this weekend,” added forward Vincent Deslauriers. “We will play one game at a time. We know we can win the two points against UPEI in our home rink. Playing with intensity and staying out of the penalty box are a must. We have given too many goals on the penalty kill, and we cannot afford that anymore. We must also score on the power play. On Saturday, anything can happen against the Varsity Reds.”

Samuel Roussy and Marc-Anthony Therrien will miss the weekend games.
