Audacieux et téméraire : le père Clément Cormier, c.s.c. (1910 – 1987), recteur-fondateur de l’Université de Moncton (“Audacious and Daring: Father Clément Cormier, c.s.c. (1910-1987), Founder and President of the Université de Moncton”), a new book on the life of Université de Moncton founder Fr. Clément Cormier, was launched on October 20, 2017, as part of the second Rendez-vous event organized by the Université de Moncton’s alumni association – L’alUMni.

Available in French, the book was co-authored by historians Marc Robichaud and Maurice Basque who tell the life story of Fr. Clément Cormier while focusing on his most commonly known role as a university professor and administrator.

“Fr. Clément Cormier dedicated his life to the post-secondary education of Acadians,” said Raymond Théberge, President and Vice-Chancellor of the Université de Moncton. “It is in large part because of him that we are able to study here, in Moncton, in French. We owe him a lot. Nearly 55 years after its founding, the Université de Moncton stands out more than ever, and I am convinced that Fr. Cormier would be proud to see the work which has been accomplished to date.”

“It is a great day for us,” said Gregory Kennedy, Research Director at the Institut d’études acadiennes. “Mr. Robichaud and Mr. Basque worked non-stop over the past few months to offer the Acadian community a book which tells the story – with great accuracy – of a great man who played a major role in creating the history of the Université de Moncton and Acadie. As well, we want to take this occasion to thank the donors, The McCain Foundation, the Clément Cormier Chair, the Religieux Sainte-Croix and the Université de Moncton’s alumni association – L’alUMni – for the financial support necessary for this project.”

The book launch was preceded by a presentation by Maurice Basque called Penser l’Acadie urbaine dans la première moitié du 20e siècle : Clément Cormier et la promotion de Moncton comme capitale de l’Acadie (“Thinking about of urban Acadie in the first half of the 20th century: Clément Cormier and the promotion of Moncton as the capital of Acadie.”)

Following the launch ceremony, Jeanne-Mance Cormier, curator at the Université de Moncton’s Musée acadien, offered a guided tour entitled Sur les traces du père Clément Cormier (“Following the footsteps of Fr. Clément Cormier”).

Audacieux et téméraire : le père Clément Cormier, c.s.c. (1910 – 1987), recteur-fondateur de l’Université de Moncton was published by the Institut d’études acadiennes and is available at the Librairie acadienne located on the Moncton campus – either in-store or online.
