Soccer Aigles play two crucial games this weekend

Université de Moncton soccer teams still have the possibility of participating in the Atlantic University Sport soccer championships, with two important games this weekend for each team.

The Aigles Bleues (4-4-0=12 points, 7th position) are only one point from the sixth and final qualifying position. The team travels to Fredericton, on Friday evening for a game against University of Fredericton Varsity Reds (2-4-3=9 points, 8th position). They also host Saint Mary’s University Huskies (0-9-0=0 point, 10th position), Sunday at 1 p.m. at Stade Moncton Stadium, their final home game of the season.

The men Aigles Bleus (3-5-0=9 points, 8th position) are 3 points behind sixth position and meet the Varsity Reds (4-3-2=14 points, 5th position), Friday evening in Fredericton. They also host the Huskies (2-6-1=7 points, 9th position), Sunday at 3:15 p.m. at Stade Moncton Stadium in the final home game. It is also the home-coming weekend for the former students of the Moncton campus.

“The game against UNB will be our revenge from last weekend,” stated women coach, Mehyar Zekaroui. “We gave them the game and we were not very happy with our play. We need to impose our style and come out in front. Saint Mary’s is last in the standings, we should win on paper, but we respect that team and we need to be serious in that game.”

“We need wins to advance,” mentioned the men’s coach, Florian Ntima-Nsiemi. “We took the time to review the video of our last game against UNB and we know we can win. We will have to impose our rhythm and intensity and play better defensive. This will ask for a more physical game for our players. We need a lot more intensity to have a positive result. Sunday, the intensity will be there from beginning to end. This will be our last home game of the season and we will take advantage of our home-coming weekend to play well in front of our former members and the public.”

Players having four or five seasons with the Aigles will be honoured in a brief ceremony before each game, Sunday.

All games can be seen on AUStv.ca.
