Aigles Bleues to host Panthers and Huskies

Université de Moncton Aigles Bleues begin their Atlantic University Sport women’s hockey regular season with two home weekend games.

The young Denis Ross coached team will start its 20th season in university hockey calibre. They host University of Prince Edward Island Panthers, Friday at 7 p.m. and the Saint Mary’s University Huskies, Sunday at 4 p.m., both games at the J.-Louis-Lévesque Arena, on the Moncton campus. A few original team members will be at the Friday evening game for the official faceoff of the 20th season, before the game.

“We did meet the Panthers twice in preseason play and we know it will not be an easy game,” stated Moncton coach Denis Ross, in his 11th season behind the bench. “We played very close games (Aigles won 3-1 and 2-1) and both teams are fast. We will have to move the puck well and fast. We made some progress on our defensive plays and our explosive offence. Sunday, it will be another close game as we meet the AUS champions for the last two seasons, the Huskies. They have most of their team back with lots of depth on the bench.”

“We did not lose any of our five preseason games and the other teams know that,” said team, captain, Cassandra Labrie. “We have been practising for the last month, but the players know the real season is about to begin. All our demanding work of the last five weeks was done thinking about this weekend. We are on a roll, but the play will edge up and will be faster from now on. I appreciate my role as team captain and I will lead by example, keep a positive attitude and play disciplined.”

The teams’ objectives for the season are to finish top 2 and surprise during the playoffs. Winger Janelle Graham will not play this weekend. Aigles Bleues players will be introduced before the game. The public is invited to attend the games which showcase the top women's hockey calibre in the Atlantic provinces. Games can be seen on AUStv.ca.
