U de M hockey and cross-country teams in action this weekend

The exhibition Atlantic University Sport 2017-2018 season begins for three Université de Moncton teams this weekend.

The men’s hockey team travels to Antigonish (NS) on Friday evening for a match-up with the St. Francis Xavier University X-Men, at 7 p.m. The women’s hockey team will host Mount Allison University Mounties, Sunday at 4 p.m. at the J.-Louis-Lévesque Arena. The cross country teams will be in Fredericton, Saturday at noon, for the women’s race and at 12:45 p.m. for the men’s race.

Men’s Hockey
“I will be able to see the real colors of my team,” stated new hockey coach, Judes Vallée. “This will be my first time seeing the players under game conditions. The X-Men have a talented team and I will get a better idea of the progress of my team. We have had 15 practices and I am looking for commitment from the players. I will see their reaction to game situation and work ethic. We have put in place a new system of play and I will see if they have adopted it. I will have a roster with a mix of veterans and rookies.”
Veteran goaltender, Brandon Thibeau, did see a difference in practices and adds that the intensity demonstrated should continue in the first game. “We have first year players, a new coach and a new organization and things should go well,” stated Thibodeau. “I am happy with my play on the ice and duties off the ice. I wish to help the younger players.”

Women’s Hockey
The first of five exhibition games for the women’s hockey team will be held this Sunday at 4 p.m. at J.-Louis-Lévesque Arena. Head coach Denis Ross says “I will take advantage of the games to evaluate my players. We will use all players to give them a chance to play on power play and penalty kill situations. It will be fun to have a game following two weeks of practices. I am looking for a good execution of our system of play. I have 20 players, including 12 forwards, six defensemen and two goaltenders. We will assess all players to form our lines and our specialty teams for the regular season.”

Cross Country
Cross county teams coach, Jean-Marc Doiron, will have an opportunity to see his runners for a first competition this season at New Brunswick and St. Thomas universities race, at Fredericton’s O’Dell Park. “This is the first meet of the season and we will have a better idea of our competition,” said Doiron. “It will also be a first university career run for our first-year athletes. The runners will get an opportunity to measure themselves against the others, but most will not go all out for this first race. There are many races in a short period of time and we need to be ready for the AUS Championship.”

There will be more than 60 athletes at the start line for the men’s 8 km race and the registered Aigles Bleus are Nassim Bousmaha, Shayne Dobson, Christian Haché, Alexandre Leclair, Ryan Smallwood and Bryan Thomas. The women’s 6km race has attracted more than 65 athletes and the registered Aigles Bleues are Caroline Bujold, Myriam Cormier, Myriam Cyr, Amy-Lynn Grant, Josianne Guay, Laurence Guitard, Émilie Guthrie, Carol-Ann MacDonald, Abygail Pelletier, Pascale Richard, December Sampson and Hannah Scott.
