Maxime St-Cyr committed to the Aigles Bleus

Jean-François Damphousse, director of hockey operations, is pleased that Saint-Charles, Québec, native Maxime St-Cyr, will join the Université de Moncton’s Aigles Bleus for the 2018-2019 Atlantic University Sport men’s hockey season.

St-Cyr, 23, is the 2014-2015 Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL) scoring champion with Baie-Comeau’s Drakkar. He has played two seasons as a professional in the East Coast and Southern Professional leagues. He decided to join the university level to pursue his studies and maintain his chances of playing professionally in a few years.

The speedy forward is 5 feet 7 inches, 185 lbs, and shoots left. In his last junior season, St-Cyr scored 54 goals in 68 games, top scorer in both the QMJHL and the Canadian Major Junior League for that season. He cannot play for the Aigles Bleus this season (2017-2018) because he played professional, but will begin his studies in September.

“I played in Moncton when my team met the Wildcats and I appreciated playing here,” St-Cyr, who will study business administration said. “I spoke of various possibilities with Jean-François Damphousse and Étienne Rouleau and I am happy to report to the Aigles Bleus. I wish to obtain my degree and then concentrate on pro hockey. I will benefit from the stability of university hockey and study as compared to the pro level. There is always somebody ready to take your place if you do not produce results.”

St-Cyr is looking forward to helping the Aigles Bleus win games and titles. He will play at the senior level this season to establish his university eligibility. He will be able to practice with the Aigles Bleus. “My offensive push is my strength in hockey,” St-Cyr added. “I can score and play in limited space in front of the net. I work hard in each game. I have been training all summer.” St-Cyr has studied at Rouyn-Noranda and Baie-Comeau’s cégeps.

He played with five teams last season: Wichita Thunder (19 games), Greenville Swamp Rabbits (12 games), Norfolk Admirals (7 games) in the East Coast League, Pensacola Ice Flyers (9 games) and Peoria Rivermen (5 games) of the Southern Professional Hockey League. The previous season, he played in the East Coast League with Florida Everglades for a total of 48 games (9-6-15). He played five seasons in the QMJHL, including a year and a half with Baie-Comeau’s Drakkar (2013-14 and 2014-2015). He played in 68 games in his last junior season with 54 goals and 30 assists, for a total of 84 points and 30 penalty minutes. He also appeared in 12 playoff games with 12 goals and 3 assists, for 15 points. He also was on the roster of Rouyn-Noranda Huskies for three and a half years, from 2010-2011 to 2013-2014.

“Maxime St-Cyr has the potential of being an impact player for us,” Jean-François Damphousse said. “I am happy he has decided to play with us. I realize he needs to sit out a year, but he will get the chance to be ready for next season.”

Damphousse also announced that former student and hockey commentator, Étienne Rouleau, will act as coordinator of recruitment for the Bleu et Or.
