More than 1,000 diplomas awarded by the Université de Moncton in 2016-2017

The Université de Moncton awarded 1,016 new diplomas and certificates on its three campuses during the 2016-2017 academic year.

On Saturday, May 27, more than 500 graduates received their diplomas during graduation ceremonies held on the Moncton campus at the CEPS Louis-J.-Robichaud.

At the ceremonies, Georges Arsenault received an honoris causa doctorate in history, while Charles Bourque became a professor emeritus in chemistry and Gemma Gallant was named a professor emeritus in nursing science.

The Université de Moncton's award of excellence in mentoring was given to Gaétan Moreau, a professor in the biology department. The award is offered to a professor who has stood out over the past few years through their exceptional engagement to their students’ learning through the quality of their mentoring. The recognition comes with a $1,000 prize.

Olivier Clarisse, an assistant professor in the chemistry and biochemistry department, received the award of excellence in teaching. Given annually by the Université de Moncton, the excellence in teaching award is bestowed upon a member of the teaching faculty from one of the three campuses who has distinguished themselves through exceptional results in teaching. This recognition comes with a $1,000 prize.

The Governor General’s gold medal was awarded to Nicolas Nicaise, a native of Wanze, Belgium, who graduated with a doctorate in literary studies with an average of 4.3. The silver medal was awarded to Raphaël Choquette of Comox, British Columbia, who graduated with a bachelor’s degree in science (kinesiology) with a 4.254 average.

The university highlighted the exemplary contribution of three graduates who received the Blue and Gold Order of Merit. This student distinction, the institution’s most prestigious, is awarded to graduates with outstanding academic achievement and extracurricular leadership.

This year’s recipients are Nicolette M. Belliveau, of Moncton, who graduated with a bachelor’s degree in social sciences (specialization in political science); Judith Desjardins of McLeod Hill, who graduated with a bachelor’s degree in social work; and Mélissa Andrée Roy of Fredericton, who graduated with a bachelor’s degree in business administration (concentration in finance).

The valedictory speech was given by Tarek Ben Abda, a naïve of Tunisia, who received his bachelor’s degree in business administration (finance).

Graduation ceremonies for the Shippagan campus were held on May 19, while graduation ceremonies for the Edmundston campus were held on May 20.
