Highlights of the April 8th Board of Governors meeting

Adoption of 2017-2018 budget

The Université de Moncton’s Board of Governors has adopted a deficit budget despite a collective effort to rationalize expenses.

“The increases to public university subsidies proposed by the provincial government over the next four years are insufficient to compensate for increases in the operational costs necessary to fully carry out our mission of teaching, research and service to the community,” said Raymond Théberge, President and Vice-Chancellor. “This decision has a direct impact on our ability to achieve a balanced budget over the next few years.”

The expected budget deficit for the 2017-2018 fiscal year is $669,000 despite a collective expense rationalization effort undertaken in recent years. The deficit also takes into count an anticipated reduction in registrations for a fourth consecutive year, a 1% increase in the provincial government’s contribution and a 2% increase in tuition fees related to the 2016-2017 budget.

“Despite our financial challenges, our priority is to encourage access to a university education by continuing to offer the lowest tuition fees among New Brunswick’s public universities,” Mr. Théberge added.

In 2016-2017, Université de Moncton tuition fees were lower by approximately $840 per academic year when compared to the average of public universities in New Brunswick. At the end of this fiscal year, the Université de Moncton will once again offer the lowest tuition fees in New Brunswick.

“We believe that the student financial aid programs recently established by the government will reduce the effects of the increase to tuition fees for a majority of students who attend a public university,” Mr. Théberge said.

The tentative agreement reached on March 9, 2017, between the Université de Moncton and the Association des bibliothécaires, professeures et professeurs de l’Université de Moncton (ABPPUM) – the union representing librarians and professors – was adopted by the Board of Governors.

The agreement will see an overall salary increase of 4.25% over three years between 2016 and 2019. As well, it will see one year added to the collective agreement which is now for five years until June 30, 2019.
