Hockey Aigles Bleues to play three games this week

L’Université de Moncton Aigles Bleues will be busy this week with three games in Atlantic University Sport women’s hockey action.

The Aigles Bleues, 5th in the standings with 5 victories, 7 losses and 3 overtime defeats, play three teams ahead of them in the standings. The Denis Ross coached team will be in Halifax, on Thursday evening, for an encounter with the Saint Mary’s University Huskies (11-1-2=24pts, 2nd position). This game was postponed from last Sunday because of poor road conditions. The Aigles Bleues will then travel to Antigonish, on Friday, for a game against the St. Francis Xavier University X-Women (8-6-0=19pts, 4th position). The third game will be on Sunday at 2 p.m. at the J.-Louis-Lévesque Arena as the University of Prince Edward Island Panthers (9-5-1=19pts, 3rd position) will be the visitors. This will be the first of five home games in the second semester.

"This will be challenging week for us," coach Denis Ross said. "We are playing three teams ahead of us in the standings and they are important games for us to climb in ranking. The games against the Huskies are always intense in their smaller rink. They beat us 1-0 the last game. We have a healthy challenge with the X-Women, over the years. This is a team that scores a lot (48-38), but also gives up many goals. The Panthers were 1-0 winners in overtime in our last game. The scores are always close."

The Aigles Bleues won their last game while the Huskies have lost their last two. The Panthers and X-Women each lost their last game.

"We worked hard the last two weeks to improve our scoring chances," Ross added. "We need to be solid on defense against these three teams and create our scoring chances."

Gabriel Forget will be the goaltender on Thursday evening. Ross and his assistants will decide the starter before the next games. Judyane Bernier, Jessica Duclos and Sydney Desrochers will miss the games because of injuries or illness.
