Aigles Bleus to host Varsity Reds

Université de Moncton Aigles Bleus (0-2) will play two Atlantic University Sport men’s hockey games this weekend.

The Serge Bourgeois coached team will host the University of New Brunswick Varsity Reds (1-0-1) Friday evening at 7 p.m. at the J.-Louis-Lévesque Arena, an activity in the Alumni Homecoming program. The team will then cross the Confederation Bridge, on Saturday, for a match-up with the University of Prince Edward Island Panthers, at 7 p.m. at the McLaughlan Arena, in Charlottetown.

Coach Serge Bourgeois promised the game this Friday will be different than the one last week in Fredericton. ‘’We worked hard on our defensive game this week,’’ Bourgeois said looking for ways to slow the Reds attack. ‘’We looked at our game in the neutral and our zones, we did not play well in these areas. It was our focus this week. We are not in a panic mode, the players know we are trying a new system and it takes time to adapt.’’

Brandon Thibeau will be the goaltender, on Friday. Bourgeois also expects his team will be different on Saturday evening against the Panthers. ‘’We worked on the small details and again, a good defensive team will launch its attacks with no problems. We gave up 16 goals in two games last week, which is not what we favor. We want to play our game.’’

Veteran defencemen Pierre Durepos said the team has gotten over the Friday loss. ‘’We know the defensive play lacked in the game,’’ the Shediac defencemen said. ‘’We need to work as a unit in each zone and all five players have to be involved. We practiced various defensive aspects this week, knowing we were playing the Reds again. We discussed various strategies during our practices. We have to slow them in the neutral zone so they have a harder time entering our zone. The six players all have major roles to play in our area and we have to communicate better on the ice. I know it will be a lot better this week.’’
