Creation of the Roméo-LeBlanc Scholarship Fund for the Advancement of Excellence in Journalism

The Université de Moncton and Brunswick News Inc. are pleased to announce the creation of the Fonds de bourses Roméo-LeBlanc pour la poursuite de l’excellence en journalisme/Roméo-LeBlanc Scholarship Fund for the Advancement of Excellence in Journalism.

The scholarships have an aggregate value of $30,000. They will be awarded in amounts of $15,000 for the third and fourth year of studies. They are intended for third-year students registered in the Information-Communication program and pursuing the journalism track.

This important scholarship fund has been made possible thanks to the generous contribution of Brunswick News Inc, which in 2004 had donated one million dollars to the Excellence fundraising campaign to create and support the Roméo-LeBlanc Chair in Journalism. At the donor's request, the Chair was terminated in order to create a scholarship fund. Its intent is to provide tangible support to students who wish to pursue excellence in journalism. Through a recent reconfiguration of the Information-Communication program, students can now choose to pursue their studies in the journalism track or the public relations track.

Applicants for the scholarship must have graduated from a New Brunswick high school and be registered as full-time, third-year students in the Bachelor of Arts (Information-Communication) journalism track. They must be in good academic standing and should have demonstrated leadership and involvement in extracurricular activities, including involvement in media and/or communciations.

The scholarship is a way for Brunswick News Inc. to continue to honour the Right Honourable Roméo LeBlanc who died in 2009. Mr. LeBlanc had always maintained a close relationship with the Université de Moncton. A graduate of the Université Saint-Joseph, he started his career as a history professor at the Collège Saint-Louis in Edmundston. From 1971 to 1972, he was assistant to the president of the institution and held responsibility for public relations. He served as the university’s chancellor from 2001 to 2004.

“We are delighted that Brunswick News Inc. has created this scholarship fund for students in the Information-Communication program. I wish to acknowledge and thank them for the outstanding gift they have made to the Université de Moncton and emerging Acadian reporters,” said president and vice-chancellor Raymond Théberge.

"Brunswick News is pleased to support quality French-language journalism in the province. We want to encourage talented New Brunswick journalism students to study and work here. This generous scholarship will help provide a deserving, French-speaking New Brunswick student with the tools they need to excel at the important occupation of journalist, said
Sylvain Montreuil, Editor-in-chief, L'Étoile & Le Madawaska.

The Fonds de bourses Roméo-LeBlanc pour la poursuite de l’excellence en journalisme/Roméo-LeBlanc Scholarship Fund for the Advancement of Excellence in Journalism is one of the largest endowment funds to have been created by donors at the Université de Moncton. Its current market value is assessed at $1,328 497.53. The new scholarship is the largest available (per year) to undergraduate students.

Eligible students must submit an application for the scholarship by Friday, September 30, 2016. Forms are available at the Financial Aid and Awards Service at the Moncton campus student centre.

The name of the recipient of the scholarship for 2016-2017 will be made public during an official ceremony to be held in October or November.
