Second Term for Francis LeBlanc

The Université de Moncton announces the appointment of Dr. Francis LeBlanc to the position of Associate Vice-President (Research) and Dean of the Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research (FGSR) for a second term. This appointment was ratified by the Board of Governors at its September 25, 2021 meeting for the period of January 1, 2022 to June 30, 2027.

Dr. LeBlanc holds a PhD in physics from the Université de Montréal. He is a full professor in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at the Université de Moncton. His field of research is stellar astrophysics and more specifically the diffusion of elements in stars. Despite his administrative responsibilities, he maintains a funded research program.

He has been an associate professor or visiting researcher at four renowned institutions (Université Laval, Université de Paris VII, Université de Toulouse, and Observatoire de Paris-Meudon). In 2010, he published a book with the prestigious Wiley publishing house entitled An Introduction to Stellar Astrophysics. This book has been used as a textbook in nearly a hundred universities, including Harvard, Caltech, Berkeley, Stanford, and Cambridge.

Since his arrival at the Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research, Dr. LeBlanc has undertaken several initiatives to improve training for students and increase our research capacity. These initiatives have paid off, as research funding has recently reached an all-time high and enrolment in graduate programs has increased. Several new programs were also introduced during his first term.

Dr. LeBlanc sits on several boards of directors including the NB Health Research Foundation, BioNB, Springboard Atlantic, and the Atlantic Cancer Research Institute. He also represents our institution on several research-related organizations.
