L’alUMni de l’Université de Moncton will award the Order of Merit to Frantz Bergevin-Jean, BA, major in Information-Communication (2001) and the Emergence Award to Katherine Lanteigne, BBA (2008) and MBA (2014). Both graduates will be honoured at the Ovation Evening in October.

Order of Merit awarded to Frantz Bergevin-Jean

Frantz Bergevin-Jean, goaltending coach of the Tampa Bay Lightning of the National Hockey League (NHL), achieved an outstanding feat in 2020 by winning his first Stanley Cup, a true professional achievement. His tireless efforts also helped his team win the Calder Cup and the Kelly Cup. Frantz has been instrumental in the careers of several NHL players, including Andrei Vasilevskiy, considered the best goaltender in the world.

A strong advocate for diversity and inclusion in the sports community, the former Aigle Bleu sits on the NHL Coaches Association’s BIPOC (Black, Indigenous and People of Color) Committee, one of the goals of which is to eliminate the stereotypes that exist against athletes and coaches of colour in the sport.

An experienced coach, Frantz Bergevin-Jean is also a sought-after mentor and a committed individual who passes on his passion and know-how to many young athletes and coaches through the training programs and sports camps they run in New Brunswick, nationally and internationally. Since 2002, Frantz has also made several presentations at Hockey Canada coaching seminars.

“L’alUMni is pleased to pay tribute to Frantz Bergevin-Jean who, through his determination, perseverance and tenacity, has succeeded in making a name for himself and reaching the highest levels of his profession as a sports coach,” said Michelyne Paulin, President of L’alUMni. She went on to say that “the values that this proud graduate embodies make him a role model, not only for our young athletes, but for all those who are pursuing a dream.”

The Order of Merit is an honorary distinction bestowed annually to recognize the exceptional contribution of a graduate who, through her or his professional activities and social actions, brings honour to Université de Moncton and to her or his profession.

Katherine Lanteigne to receive Emergence Award

The 2021 Emergence Award will be presented to Katherine Lanteigne, a young Bathurst businesswoman who is committed to social, political and community engagement and who greatly contributes to the vitality of the Chaleur region.

In 2016, Katherine Lanteigne became the youngest elected councillor on Bathurst’s city council, where she served until 2021, assuming the role of deputy mayor for a period during her mandate.

A true leader in her community, she has been involved in numerous projects aimed at countering the exodus of young people, notably the co-founding of Synergies Chaleur, a non-profit organization whose mission is to create networking opportunities for young adults in the Chaleur region. She has also been involved with the CBDC’s Chaleur... my home, my future! initiative since 2008.

Katherine is the director of Women in Business New Brunswick, a provincial organization that provides advice and services for the advancement of women entrepreneurs.

“Whether in her academic or professional career, Katherine Lanteigne has left her mark and is recognized for her strong leadership and inspiring civic engagement”, noted Michelyne Paulin. “L'alUMni is proud to celebrate the success of this graduate who is an outstanding ambassador for our alma mater.”

Established in 2008, the Emergence Award recognizes a Université de Moncton graduate, 35 years of age or younger, who has distinguished herself or himself through leadership and achievements in her or his emerging career and contributions to society.

Frantz Bergevin-Jean, BA, major in Information-Communication (2001)

Frantz Bergevin-Jean has been involved in the world of hockey for nearly 40 years. His career is marked by his desire to excel and willingness to pass on his passion to new generations of athletes.

He began his career at the age of 12 as a goalie in the minor hockey league in the Town of Mont Royal, in the heart of the Island of Montreal. He then played in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League for the St. Hyacinthe and Victoriaville teams.

After a tryout at the Montreal Canadiens training camp in 1991, the high-level athlete obtained a leadership award from Université de Moncton, where he studied Information-Communication while joining the Aigles Bleus hockey team. He played four and a half seasons with the organization, earning a nomination to the Atlantic University Sport association’s first all-star team in 1992–93 and winning the Canadian U-Sports hockey championship in 1994–95. While at Université de Moncton, Frantz was active in student life, particularly with the student radio and newspaper. He was also president of the Les médias acadiens universitaires for one term.

After completing his bachelor’s degree, and while pursuing a career in public relations, Frantz Bergevin-Jean spent 12 seasons as the goaltending coach for the Moncton Wildcats of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL). During his time with the Wildcats, they were named the league’s top defensive team four times and two of the team’s goaltenders were named QMJHL Defensive Player of the Year.

In 2009 and 2010, he was a member of Hockey Canada’s coaching staff for the under-18 teams that won two gold medals at the Ivan Hlinka international tournament in Slovakia and the Czech Republic.

In 2010, Frantz Bergevin-Jean’s career took a major turn when he became the National Hockey League (NHL) Tampa Bay Lightning goaltending coach. Frantz has played a key role in the careers of several Lightning players, including Ben Bishop and Andrei Vasilevskiy, winner of the Vezina Trophy in 2019 and considered the best goaltender in the world.

Committed to making hockey accessible to all, in an environment free of racism and discrimination, Frantz places great importance on passing on his expertise and passion to young athletes and minor hockey coaches. He achieves this goal through the many camps and seminars he conducts in New Brunswick and in several Canadian and American cities through his Pro Tek hockey school. A sought-after speaker, he is called upon to speak on many forums in Canada, the United States and Europe, where he often takes the opportunity to remind people of his pride in having worn the Bleu et Or colours.
