Creation of a Health Research Chair in Therapeutic Cannabis at the Université de Moncton

The Université de Moncton announced the creation of a new research chair today in collaboration with Clinique la Croix Verte and the New Brunswick Health Research Foundation (NBHRF).

The Health Research Chair in Therapeutic Cannabis will be officially established at the university in the coming months with $1 million in funding over five years from Clinique la Croix Verte and the NBHRF. Clinique la Croix Verte is committed to partnering with the university on various cannabis-related research projects, such as the study of the diversity and specificity of the human psychological and physiological response to cannabinoid administration.

“The Université de Moncton is becoming an authority in cannabis research,” said Dr. Denis Prud’homme, the university’s President and Vice-Chancellor. “The creation of the Health Research Chair in Therapeutic Cannabis will lead to advances that will greatly benefit Canadians by significantly improving the management of certain health issues. Our facilities, such as the New Brunswick Centre for Precision Medicine and the Centre d’innovation et de recherche sur le cannabis, along with our expertise in the field, will be undeniable assets in ensuring the success of the Chair’s research activities.”

“Clinique la Croix Verte is pleased to share its expertise in medicinal cannabis with the Université de Moncton,” said Shantal Arroyo, the clinic’s Director and co-founder. “We have been restoring quality of life to our members with health issues through customized natural care products made from medicinal cannabis since 2014. The personalized care we give each patient has allowed us to create an impressive database of information about the benefits and consequences of the medicinal use of various cannabinoids.”

“NBHRF is pleased to support this second Chair in Cannabis research in the province,” said Peter Brenders, CEO of the NBHRF. “This position further helps New Brunswick build expertise in the ongoing need to learn more about the potential utility and risks of cannabis.”

A competition is underway to recruit the new Chair.

Established in Montreal in 2014, Clinique la Croix Verte responds to the community’s needs by facilitating and supervising access to medicinal cannabis. It also advises people using cannabis and its derivatives for medicinal purposes. The clinic offers expertise in traditional and herbal medications and medicinal marijuana to health professionals.

The NBHRF was created in July 2008 with a mandate to coordinate, support and promote health research in New Brunswick. The NBHRF is an independent organization governed by a Board of Directors comprised of key stakeholders in the New Brunswick health research community.
