Angel Dionne explores the concept of guilt during her Ph.D. studies

Angel Dionne, Professor of English Literature at the Université de Moncton, campus d’Edmundston (UMCE) passed the oral defense for her creative writing doctoral thesis last month at the University of Pretoria in South Africa. Her project focused on Bernard Malamud’s representations of guilt and its repercussions.

Professor Dionne’s work was supervised by English professor and author David Medalie of the South African university.

The doctoral thesis entitled Guilt and its repercussions: Bernard Malamud’s ‘The Magic Barrel’ analyzes the role that existential guilt plays in Bernard Malamud’s 1958 short story collection, The Magic Barrel. The thesis uses Martin Buber’s philosophy of guilt and the I-Thou to build upon an understanding of Malamud’s text as commentary on the repercussions of unresolved guilt.

The short story collection The Elephant and Other Stories, which was written in partial fulfillment of the doctorate in creative writing, is composed of narratives which explore themes of isolation, guilt, and the importance of relationships. The stories grapple with the complexities of guilt and often feature characters who, amid their self-imposed isolation and solitude, are faced with the experience of being haunted by guilt which often appears in the form of a persistent “other” or visitor.

Angel Dionne possesses an MA in English Literature from the Southern New Hampshire University (2014) and a BA in English Literature from the University of Maine at Fort Kent (2012). Since July 2020, she has been Assistant Professor in English Literature at the Université de Moncton, campus d’Edmundston after having been a Lecturer and a Temporary Professor.

Angel Dionne is the author of a dozen creative literary works. Since 2012, she has given various workshops in the states of Maine and Rhode Island.
