Enrollments Up at the Université de Moncton

Despite the present COVID-19 situation, the Université de Moncton has 33 more full-time students enrolled this year, in comparison to September 2019, bringing the student population up to 4521. This is the highest number since 2016.

An increase of 83 enrollment from New Brunswick explains much of this global increase. Enrollment has risen from 3083 in September 2019 to 3166 in September 2020. The number of students from New Brunswick’s Francophone high schools enrolled this was maintained this year, with a participation rate of 34.3%.

“Our performance shows clearly that the entire university community’s recruitment efforts have borne fruit and that they are in line with the recruitment strategy that we established at the start of the pandemic,” said the President and Vice-Chancellor, Dr. Denis Prud’homme.

On the other hand, the number of full-time international students dropped from 822 in September 2019 to 775 in September 2020, a decrease of 47 (-5.7%).

The COVID-19 pandemic is indubitably one reason for the reduced number of international students enrolled. Among other things, the pandemic closed Canadian embassies around the world and delayed the processing of student applications. The situation is affecting all Canadian universities. This explains the relationship between the total number of enrollments, and the reduced international clientele.

Despite the small overall increase in enrollments, the reduced number of international students combined with other factors will have a strong impact on the Université’s financial situation. At its meeting on September 26, the Board of Governors will present budgets for the 2020–2021 and 2021–2022 fiscal years. “These budgets will reflect the importance of balancing funding for the Université’s activities with its sources of funds, particularly by increasing efficiency in the training programs offered and in our administrative processes, while continuing to increase enrollment,” Dr. Prud’homme added.

The following tables (available in French only) present the details of enrollment at the three campuses of the Université de Moncton as of Monday, September 21, 2020.
