The Université de Moncton Garners National Recognition for Collaborative, Innovative Research Activities for Graduate Students

The Université de Moncton has shown remarkable progress in collaborative research by its full-time graduate students in 2019-2020, according to the Mitacs 2019-2020 Annual Activity Report. Mitacs is an intermediary between businesses and research-oriented Canadian universities.

Each year for nearly five years the number of Université de Moncton graduate students participating in research under a Mitacs program has tripled.

Last year was a record one for collaborative research at the Université, with over $2 million worth of projects co-funded by its partners and Mitacs. The disciplines covered are diverse and target economic development needs in New Brunswick and Canada. The Université de Moncton also welcomed 26 international interns who were fully funded by Mitacs. These interns worked in a wide range of disciplines, including astronomy, criminology, economics, chemistry and engineering, to name but a few.

In 2019, out of a total of 72 Canadian universities partnering with Mitacs, the Université de Moncton offered the greatest number of opportunities under the Mitacs Accelerate program per graduating student.

Under this program, graduate students can benefit from an internship lasting at least four months equivalent to $15,000. The scope and length of the internship can be modified to include larger long-term projects, as well as allowing these students to access clusters of internships in which groups of interns carry out a project that requires several four-month internship units.

“These research projects, made possible thanks to our many partners and to financial assistance from Mitacs, enrich the student experience at the Université de Moncton,” said Francis LeBlanc, Associate Vice-President of Research and Dean of the Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research. “Our graduate students use their expertise and undertake the challenges of research serving businesses and community organizations here and abroad. They work with specialists from across the world, become more employable and represent the next generation of research talent.

“At the Université de Moncton, businesses find our professors’ savoir-faire and expertise to develop their innovation and conquer new markets,” added Valérie Bonnardel-Vacqué, Director of the Innovation Support Office. “But they also find the most qualified students, shaped by collaborative research to their specific recruitment needs for today and tomorrow.”

“Congratulations to the Université de Moncton for leveraging Mitacs’s offerings and providing new opportunities for students to develop and research programs to advance, said John Hepburn, CEO and Scientific Director of Mitacs. To achieve this recognition is truly remarkable, especially considering the challenges Canada’s minority Francophone universities face. This first-place ranking is testament to the extremely smart and talented students and faculty of the Université de Moncton, supported by the governments of Canada and New Brunswick.”

Mitacs is a national not-for-profit organization devoted to developing essential skills in the next generation of innovators through its unique professional training and research programs. The Université de Moncton has been an associate partner since 2015.
