Highlights of the Board of Governors Meeting on June 13, 2020

Budget presentation delayed

Due to the extraordinary circumstances around the COVID-19 pandemic, the Board of Governors decided to delay presentation of the budget to its September 2020 meeting. This budget will cover the 2020-2021 and 2021-2022 fiscal years.

Regular operations can continue until the budget is passed. The Board of Governors also adopted guidelines for preparing this budget following a presentation by management during the meeting. A significant financial challenge is to be expected in the coming years.

“The Université has to find a judicious balance between funding its activities and the available sources of revenue,” noted interim President and Vice-Chancellor Jacques Paul Couturier. “Without a major increase in funding for post-secondary education from the government of New Brunswick, the Université may be forced to make hard choices when it brings down its budget for 2020-2021 and 2021-2022.”

The Board of Governors also adopted tuition fees for 2020-2021. Tuition for students enrolled in 2019-2020 will increase by 2% in order to comply with the memorandum of understanding signed with the government of New Brunswick. Tuition for other full-time Canadian and international students will increase by 8%. “We had to make difficult decisions this year in order to be able to continue to offer a first-class education,” Mr. Couturier added. “Despite the increase, our tuition fees are still lower than those of New Brunswick’s three public Anglophone universities.”

Three collective agreements signed

Collective agreements were concluded with the following associations:

  • Association des professeures et professeurs de l’Université de Moncton, campus d’Edmundston, for a four-year period from July 1, 2019, to June 30, 2023.
  • Association des techniciennes et techniciens de l’Université de Moncton for a five-year period from May 1, 2019, to April 30, 2024.
  • Association des bibliothécaires, professeures et professeurs de l’Université de Moncton for a two-year period from July 1, 2019, to June 30, 2021.

Philanthropic Development and Alumni Relations

The Board of Governors adopted a five-year plan for Philanthropic Development and Alumni Relations. Among the facets of the plan are diversified and integrated engagement and fundraising strategies to increase the Université’s revenues and strengthen its ties to the community, especially with alumni. “This plan shows the way forward to encourage pride in the Université and motivate public participation in activities that help to advance our mission,” explained Mr. Couturier.
