Faculty and librarians adapting well to the COVID-19 crisis

A survey by the Association des bibliothécaires, des professeures et des professeurs de l’Université de Moncton (ABPPUM – the Université de Moncton’s association of librarians and professors) shows an acceptable level of satisfaction with the new way of working during the COVID-19 crisis.

According to the ABPPUM survey, some professors and librarians find that working from home improves work-life balance, while for others it represents a major challenge. The new variables in the world of instruction, in particular confinement and the use of new technological tools, have an impact on respondents’ physical and mental health. All in all, the results compiled show that the level if satisfaction among faculty members and librarians with this new way of working and the various tools at their disposal is acceptable.

“The present crisis has caused major unexpected changes in our professional lives,” explained Jacques Paul Couturier, interim President and Vice-Chancellor. “This means that faculty and librarians have had to adapt rapidly to new working and teaching conditions. Despite the challenge posed by the pandemic, they have managed to provide top-quality instruction to our students, and I wish to thank them sincerely. Your patience, adaptability and resilience are exemplary.”

“The survey results show that as a whole ABPPUM members have accepted the challenge by adapting rapidly to distance instruction in order to provide an end-of-semester experience that meets our students’ needs,” stated Mathieu Lang, ABPPUM President. “We absolutely must leverage this crisis to spur our transition to a promising and positive future. We will have to unite our skills and abilities in order to find new ways to couple technology and instruction.”

Recall that in-person classes at the Université de Moncton were suspended from March 16 to 30, 2020, because of the coronavirus pandemic. The Winter 2020 semester was concluded using alternative solutions. Since the reopening plan for September will be directed toward distance education, the university community will continue to acclimatize itself to this new learning and instructional paradigm.
