Soccer Aigles Travel to Nova Scotia

The Université de Moncton soccer teams will face some of the top squads in the country as they travel to Nova Scotia in Atlantic University Sport weekend games.

The women Aigles Bleues (2-1-1=7points, 5th position) will battle the Cape Breton University Capers (5-10=15 points, 2nd position) on Saturday at 3 p.m. and the St. Francis Xavier University X-Women (3-0-2=11 points, 4th position) on Sunday at 1 p.m.

Coach Mehyar Zekaroui is looking forward to these first two games played in less than 24 hours. “We are going to compete with them,” Zekaroui said. “The country’s third-best team will be our opponent on Saturday. These two teams have a similar style of play, and our plan will be similar in both games. We will remain in the game as long as possible, from beginning to end. It will require a lot more player rotations. I will have the chance to see a number of rookies in stressful situations.”

Team captain Natalie Fleming is confident going into these games. “This our first two-game weekend, and all points are important at the end of the season,” Fleming said. “These are important games. We had very good practices this week. Our UPEI victory gave us momentum and confidence and we will transfer that to our weekend games against top teams.”

In men’s soccer, the Aigles Bleus (1-2-1=4 points, 8th position, 6 goals) will face the Capers (5-0-1=16 points, 1st position, 18 goals) on Saturday at 5:15 p.m. and the X-Men (3-1-1=10 points, 3rd position, 13 goals) on Sunday at 3:15 p.m.
“This is another huge weekend for us,” said Moncton coach Younes Bouida. “We are looking for points and it will not be easy against these two strong teams. I know we are confident and capable of playing with these two offensive teams.”

Defencemen Nikolas Landry knows the games will be hardly fought. “This is a big weekend for us,” Landry said. “These two teams have always been top two for my three years playing here. We have big battles in front of us on Saturday and Sunday. The season is still young, and we will do our best and show we are not done. To win in this difficult environment, we need to play disciplined and have a very good mental preparation.”

All games may be watched on AUStv.ca.
