New Brunswick and International Students Driving an Increase in Enrolment

For a second consecutive year, the Université de Moncton is reporting a significant jump in full-time enrolment for its fall session, with the total number of students up by 123 over last year. The Université de Moncton currently has 4488 full-time students.

Full-time enrolment of international students climbed from 777 in 2018-2019 to 822 in 2019-2020, up 45. Over the same period, Canadian enrolment grew by 78 students (including 73 from New Brunswick) from 3588 to 3666.

The vast majority (69%) of students enrolled at the Université de Moncton come from New Brunswick. International students make up the second largest group at 23%.

The great popularity of the Université de Moncton among international students has helped to offset the effects of the province’s demographic challenges. “We attract students from abroad that may choose to settle permanently in New Brunswick,” stated Jacques Paul Couturier, interim president and vice-chancellor. “We offer the study programs they are looking for, which also increases the likelihood of their entering the workforce in New Brunswick.”

A high retention rate among students from New Brunswick has also been observed. “Despite the population decline in New Brunswick, based on the data, we have been retaining our New Brunswick students,” explained Jean-Paul Loyer, executive director of strategic enrolment management. “If this decline were affecting us, our enrolment would be dropping, but we appear to be beating this trend.”

“Our recruitment strategy is highly effective and helping to boost our reputation as a university of choice among both Acadians and international students,” continued Mr. Couturier.

The Faculty of Administration posted the greatest increase in full-time enrolment, up 58 students over last year. It was followed by the Faculty of Education Sciences, where enrolment climbed by 53 students versus last year. Student numbers have also increased at the master’s and doctoral levels, with the number of master’s students increasing by 9% over the past year.
