Instrumental Stories

As part of the Congrès mondial acadien (CMA) 2019, the Galerie d’art Louise-et-Reuben-Cohen (GALRC) and the Musée acadien de l’Université de Moncton (MAUM) presents an exhibition titled Instrumental Stories. Organized by guest curator Véronique Leblanc, this exhibition brings together the work of ten artists and one collective presented in five exhibition spaces in Moncton.

“What are the stories on which is based our understanding of the reality that we experience and to which cultures do we feel a sense of belonging? What are the narratives that should be told because they have been silenced for too long? Conversely, what are the myths that we perpetuate and which deserve to be challenged because they produce different forms of oppression?”

Instrumental Stories brings together the work of artists from diverse horizons, a majority of which are women. It explores questions of belonging through contemporary work in a vast array of mediums such as installation, drawing, painting, performance, video, ceramic, photography and embroidery.

The artists are Maryse Arseneault, Jennifer Bélanger, Rémi Belliveau, Acadie art exchange collective (Sheila LeBlanc, Ariella Pahlke, and Ann Verrall, with the participation of the community of Clare), Angèle Cormier, Noémie DesRoches, Mario Doucette, Natalie Sappier (Samaqani Cocahq), Sarah Saunders, Anna Torma, and Becka Viau.

The opening at the art gallery and museum on campus will be held on Friday, August 9 from 5 to 7 p.m. A second opening will be held at the downtown locations on Friday, August 16, starting at 3 p.m. at Assumption Gallery, followed by a visit of a project presented at the Extrême Frontière Space, and continuing at Moncton Gallery until 5 p.m. The openings will be attended by the artists and the curator.

Public and educational activities will be presented in relation to the exhibition, such as a round-table discussion titled Instrumental Stories, archive and fiction in art on August 9 at 4:30 p.m., and a meeting with the participants of Les Voix de Clare résonnent project on August 20 at 4:30 p.m. (Please note that both events will be held mostly in French.) More detailed information will be available via Facebook.

The exhibition will be presented until August 30 in the downtown locations, and until October 13 at GALRC and MAUM. Admission is free and is open to all.

Instrumental Stories is made possible with the support of the CMA 2019, the City of Moncton, Université de Moncton, Assumption Life, and the Bibliothèque Champlain of Université de Moncton. The GALRC and the MAUM are supported by the Department of Tourism, Heritage, and Culture of New Brunswick. GALRC is also supported by the Canada Council for the Arts.
