Today the Université de Moncton inaugurated the Didier-Gauthier Laboratory in the Faculty of Sciences and announced the creation of the Fonds de bourses Didier-Gauthier scholarship fund.

These projects came to fruition thanks to a major $200,000 donation from the family of the late Didier Gauthier, and family members attended the announcement. Didier Gauthier was a professor of Biochemistry in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at the Université de Moncton for about thirty years.

The Didier-Gauthier Laboratory, used to teach a number of undergraduate courses in Biochemistry, has new leading-edge equipment. The funds were used to purchase devices including a rocking shaker, a humidity and CO2 controlled incubator, trinocular inverted microscopes, a low-temperature freezer and microcentrifuges. In the laboratory, Biochemistry students will be able to practise what they’ve learned in their theory courses and develop their skills in modern biochemical analysis methods.

“The Didier-Gauthier Laboratory will have a significant impact on the education of our students and the advancement of programs in the Faculty of Sciences,” said the interim President and Vice-Chancellor of the Université de Moncton, Jacques Paul Couturier. “We are proud to be able to prepare our future biochemists in an environment that matches their future working milieu.”

“We’re delighted that this donation will be of benefit to students at the Université, and we’re sure that this is what Didier would have wanted,” added Anne Gauthier, sister of the late Didier Gauthier. “Didier spent his whole professional career at the Université and it became his second family. We are happy to know that his memory will live on through this gift.”

The Bourse Didier-Gauthier scholarship will go to full-time students enrolled in the second, third or fourth year of an undergraduate program in Biochemistry on the Moncton campus of the Université de Moncton who have an excellent academic record.
