Hockey Aigles Bleues in Antigonish, Wednesday evening

The rivalry between the Aigles Bleues and the X-Women will be revived this week as they meet in the Atlantic University Sport women’s hockey best of 3 semi-finals.

The first game will be held on Wednesday in Antigonish, and the second Saturday in Moncton at the J.-Louis-Lévesque Arena. Both games will take place at 7 p.m. Moncton has just completed a difficult quarterfinal against the Dalhousie University Tigers.

“I expect a very fast series with exciting plays from one end of the rink to the other,” Moncton coach Denis Ross indicated. “This series will also be tough, but less physical than the first one with very close scores. The X Women always find a way to score the important goal. We will have to be alert, play well defensively, and take advantage of our scoring chances. The results of the regular season have no bearing. The game is played on the ice at that moment. Our special units played well in the first series. We held a good practice, and we viewed videos to make sure we are ready.”

Gabrielle Forget will play in nets, and the trios should be the same as last Sunday.

In regular season play, the Aigles Bleues lost 3-2, 4-1 and 6-2, and won 2-1 against the X-Women. In 24 games, Moncton won 10, compared to the 20 won by the X-Women. The X Women scored 79 goals and allowed 42, compared to 48 and 59 for the Aigles Bleues.

Moncton lost 2-1 to Saint Mary’s in semi-final play last year, and the Huskies went on to defeat the X-Women 2-1 in the final. The other semi-final series between the Saint Mary’s Huskies and the St. Thomas University Tommies will also begin on Wednesday in Halifax, with the second game in Fredericton on Saturday evening.

The games can be seen on AUStv.ca.
