Hockey Aigles Bleus add four new defencemen for next season

Université de Moncton Aigles Bleus hockey operations director, Jean-François Damphousse, is pleased that four 20-year-old defencemen will join the men’s hockey team for the Atlantic University Sport 2018-2019 season.

Vincent Lanoue, of Le Gardeur, Quebec, Alexandre Bernier, of Dieppe, New Brunswick, Tobie Paquette-Bisson, of Rosemère, Quebec, and Olivier Desjardins, of Drummondville, Quebec, have signed a letter stating their intention to lace their skates with the Aigles Bleus in September.

Vincent Lanoue shoots left, measures 5’10”, and weighs 190 lbs. He is playing his fifth season on the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL), including one season with the Quebec Remparts (0-7=7 points), a season and a half with the Val-d’Or Foreurs (1-18=19 points), and two and a half with the Victoriaville Tigers (19-89=108 points).

“The AUS league is the best in Canada, and I am attracted by its calibre,” said Lanoue, who will further studies in civil engineering. “The Aigles Bleus are offering me an opportunity to study and play hockey. I am a both way defenceman, and I hope to bring some stability to the team. I enjoy helping the offensive punch with good transition in our zone. I also enjoy playing on the power play and the penalty kill. My five seasons experience in major junior will help me in university hockey. I am not too familiar with the calibre, but I will bring my leadership and I learn fast.”

Alexandre Bernier, 5’9”, 166 lbs, is presently playing with the Edmundston Blizzard of the Maritime Junior Hockey League. He played a season and a half with the Saint John Sea Dogs (27 games in 2016-2016, 55 in 2016-2017) of the QMJHL. He scored four goals and added 19 assists, for a total of 23 points in 82 games. He won the President’s Cup. This season with the Blizzard, he has four goals and 27 assists, with 31 points in 42 games, the 5th top scorer of his team. He also played for the Dieppe Commandos and the Moncton major midget Flyers. He is presently a business administration student at the Université de Moncton.

“Growing up in the area, I did attend several Aigles Bleus games, and I always hoped that one day I could play with the team,” said Alexandre Bernier. His father Marc and brother Mathieu have both worn the Université de Moncton’s jersey. “I am already studying at the Université de Moncton. My year and half experience playing with the Saint John Sea Dogs and this year with the Blizzard will help me at the university level. I did win a championship with the Sea Dogs. University hockey is off high calibre and physical. I have a good vision of the play, and I am good at passing the puck to launch the offence. I also have a good shot from the blue line. I know I am a bit small, but I play well in front of the net. My objective is to help the team win a championship. My father has won two with the team, and I will bring my leadership.”

Tobie Paquette-Bisson shoots left, measures 6’ 3”, and weighs 193 lbs. He has played four seasons in the QMJHL. Presently playing with the Blainville-Boisbriand Armada (28 games in 2016-2017, 46 in 2017-2018), he also wore the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles sweater (64 games from 2015 to 2017) and the Baie-Comeau Drakkar (75 games in 2014 -2015). He has two goals and 20 assists this season.

“I heard positive comments on the Aigles Bleus hockey program and the Université de Moncton,” Paquette-Bisson said. “I know a few players, and I wish to be part of the rebuilding of the team. I enjoy challenges, and want to become a key player as the team rebuilds towards a championship season. My strength on the ice is my ability to launch the offensive attack. I am a fast skater with a good vision of the play. I have a few friends playing at the university level, and I know it is a high calibre and popular.” Paquette-Bisson has played with Vincent Deslauriers and Justin Vanier-Guénette of the Aigles Bleus. He expects to study marketing or nutrition.

Olivier Desjardins measures 6’2” and weighs 199 lbs. The big defencemen played four seasons in the QMJHL, two with the Val-d’Or Foreurs (2014 to 2016), one with the Acadie-Bathurst Titans (2016-2017), and shared this season between the Moncton Wildcats (eight games) and the Charlottetown Islanders (38 games).

“I really enjoyed Moncton when I played with the Wildcats,” Olivier Desjardins said. “I want to further my studies in primary education in French in the Maritimes. I have been a defenceman for 15 years, and I enjoy getting the overall image of the play you get on the ice. There is pressure, but I also like to block shots. You can influence the game. I have not seen many university games, but I know the play is of a high calibre, fast and you play with men. I wish to help the Aigles Bleus play towards a championship. I am enjoying my season with the surprising Islanders.” Desjardins played two seasons with goaltender Étienne Montpetit in Val-d’Or. He has three goals and six assists in 52 games this season.

“Our defensive game has suffered this season, and we are looking at rebuilding for the future,” hockey operations director Jean-François Damphousse said. “These four defensive players can help our team. They are mobile and have the experience needed to help our team towards a championship.”
