At an extraordinary meeting, the Executive Committee of the Board of Governors of the Université de Moncton has appointed Jacques Paul Couturier as interim president and vice-chancellor of the Université de Moncton. He succeeds Raymond Théberge, who has held the position since 2012 and will resign from his role officially on January 26, 2018, to accept a position as Canada’s next Commissioner of Official Languages.

In accordance with the university’s human resources management policy, the Executive Committee may choose to appoint an interim president and vice-chancellor. It opted for Dr. Couturier, the current vice-president of the Edmundston campus of the Université de Moncton since 2013, due to his broad-ranging experience and familiarity with university affairs.

“The Board of Governors welcomes the appointment of Dr. Couturier as interim president,” stated board president Edith Doucet. “In light of his extensive familiarity with the university’s current affairs, I am confident that he will fulfil his mandate with skill and integrity.”

Jacques Paul Couturier served as dean of studies at the Edmundston campus from 2004 to 2013. He also held the positions of interim dean of the Faculty of Forestry in 2012-2013 and head of the humanities sector at the Edmundston campus from 2001 to 2004. He first came to the Université de Moncton in 1992 as a professor of history. Dr. Couturier earned a Ph.D. and a master’s degree in history from the Université de Montréal after completing his undergraduate studies at the Université de Moncton (bachelor of arts in history and bachelor of multidisciplinary arts).

A decision with regard to filling the position of vice-president of the Edmundston campus vacated by Dr. Couturier will be made in early January.

The selection process concerning the next president and vice-chancellor will be launched in January. A selection advisory committee will be formed for this purpose pursuant to the university’s executive selection process. The selection advisory committee is mandated to identify candidates for the position of president and vice-chancellor. The selection process has multiple phases as set out in the executive selection policy and takes up to 15 months on average.
