Université de Moncton Aigles Bleus director of hockey operations, Jean-François Damphousse, is pleased that Val d’Or Foreurs goaltender, Étienne Monpetit, of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL), will join the Aigles Bleus for the 2018–2019 season.

Montpetit, from Valleyfield, is a 20-year-old player, 5’11”, 160 lbs. He is in his fourth and final major junior season. A first-class goaltender, he is a former champion and a playoff midget AAA MVP player, in 2013–2014. He was a QMJHL all-star player in 2015–2016.

“The Aigles Bleus were interested in me and I could pursue my studies in French,” Montpetit said. “The Aigles have a prestigious team and Jean-François informed me of the new direction of the team. I know the Aigles Bleus will be competitive and I wish to contribute to this team.”

The goaltender, recently named QMJHL player of the week, sees many pucks this season with the Foreurs. He played 136 games in three seasons and 19, up-to-date, this season. He collected five assists as a goaltender, including four in 2015–2016. He has maintained averages of 3.40, 2.71 and 3.14, and has 88 wins, 48 losses and 7 tie games, in three and a half seasons. He has received, this season, an average of 38 shots per game and has 11 wins and 8 losses. His team is 13th in the standings (13-12-0-1=27 points).

“I lived great moments in my 15-year hockey career,” Montpetit added. “I did win the Quebec midget AAA championship and we lost in overtime in the championship game of the Telus Cup, in 2013–2014. I also lived the championship of the QMJHL and the President’s Cup.”

The student athlete will pursue engineering studies-civil at the Moncton campus. He is interested in playing pro hockey in Europe, after his studies. “I have not attended any university calibre games, but I know it is close to the American Hockey League calibre. This is interesting for me.” He has played with Aigles Bleus player Danick Crête and against Vincent Deslauriers and Maxime St-Cyr.

“Étienne is one of the best goaltenders in major junior hockey,” stated Jean-François Damphousse. “He is having a stellar season and enables his young team to remain competitive and play better than .500 on a team with five 16-year old players. With his play, his team keeps getting important standing points. He was approached by several other university teams, and the fact he chose the Aigles Bleus program proves the move to relaunch is on track and other players will be confirmed in the coming months.”
