U de M soccer teams in St. John’s

Friday and Saturday, the Université de Moncton soccer teams are in St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador, for the last Atlantic University Sport regular season games.

The women Aigles Bleues (5-5-0=15 points, 6th position) play the Memorial University Sea-Hawks (5-1-4= 19 points, 2nd position) and the men Aigles Bleus (4-6-0=12 points, 8th position), the Sea-Hawks (4-5-1=13 points, 6th position). There are two games on Friday evening, at 5 p.m. and 7:15 p.m. and two on Saturday, at noon and 2:15 p.m. The top six teams advance to the AUS championships. Both Moncton teams still have a chance of qualifying, but a number of other teams are still in the hunt.

“These are two important games for our qualification,” stated Moncton coach, Mehyar Zekaroui. “We are playing against a team in second place with the aim of staying there to advance directly in the semifinals. Our aim is to finish top 6 and our practices this week was done to get the maximum from the players for the upcoming games. All the athletes are available, except possibly Renée Gauvin, who was injured Sunday. We are looking forward to these games and we are ready.”

“These are two important games against a team in the same situation as we are in the standings,” said men’s coach Florian Ntima Nsiemi. “We do not have our destiny in our hands, but we did the calculations and the various scenarios. It should be great games. These are playoff type games for us and the result is what matters most. We need to get the maximum points in the two games.”
