During a visit to the Université de Moncton on February 21, the new CEO of UNI Financial Cooperation, Robert Moreau, renewed the agreement to promote research on the management of cooperatives and delivered a speech entitled UNI, une histoire et une richesse à partager (“UNI – a story and richness to share”).

UNI Financial Cooperation has supported research on cooperatives at the Université de Moncton since 1964 through investment income earned in a dedicated fund of the Fondation des Caisses populaires acadiennes. The new agreement stipulates that the fund’s capital – approximately $150,000 – will be transferred into the Université de Moncton’s name and that more flexibility will be provided for subsidizing a larger number of research projects.

Income from this endowment fund will be used to support the research group in financial management as well as other research projects and initiatives submitted by professors, students or the community.

The fund’s objectives are to promote cooperation, notably those relating to the various facets of the management of cooperatives; to plan and undertake research projects relating to the management of cooperatives; encourage strong interest among the student population in the area of management of cooperatives and the cooperative model; encourage the participation of students, especially at the graduate and post-graduate levels, in research and development activities in the area of cooperatives; and to support various services to the community inside and outside of the university to ensure the overall influence of the cooperative movement. All three campuses are eligible for funding.

During his speech, Mr. Moreau outlined the path that made UNI the first cooperative financial institution to obtain a federal charter. Other topics touched on included improvements in customer experience, for example the necessity for merging caisses populaires, the closures of caisses populaires in certain areas, and the change in branding. Mr. Moreau provided very useful advice to students on the qualities they need to develop in order to better enable workplace integration.
