Update – Malicious emails sent to university community

Our internal investigation confirms that the source of malicious emails sent to the university community is an email server outside the country. The source falsified the return addresses in the emails.

“We have determined that this consists of someone being impersonated and does not compromise the security of the Université de Moncton’s IT network,” says Raymond Théberge, President and Vice-Chancellor. “This means that the personal information of Université de Moncton students and staff is safe.”

Effective today, we have put in place telephone lines to offer support services to members of the university community on all three campuses. These services are available in-person at the designated locations or by calling the following telephone numbers:

Edmundston Campus
Telephone: 506-737-5295, room A-115

Moncton Campus
Telephone: 506-858-4600, room C-101 in the students’ centre

Shippagan Campus
Telephone: 506-336-3404, room 105PIL

Due to the fact that the emails originated outside the country, we have determined that there is little risk to members of the university community. However, we are working with the appropriate authorities, including the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, to ensure safety on our campuses and to stop this campaign of degrading and unwanted emails.
