Hockey Aigles Bleues visit Panthers

Université de Moncton Aigles Bleues had an eye on getting to the Atlantic University Sport women’s hockey championship final this season.

Two playoff series separate the young Denis Ross coached team to that objective and the first one begins on Thursday in Charlottetown in the first game of the best of 3 quarter finals. The Aigles Bleues (8-12-4=20pts, 5th position) will compete against the University of Prince Edward Island Panthers (14-9-1=29pts, 4th position) in the first game. The second match will be on Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. at the J.-Louis-Lévesque Arena at the Moncton campus.

The Panthers won 14 games this season compared to the eight by Moncton. UPEI scored 53 goals and allowed the same number in 24 games while Moncton stats were 54 and 61. The Aigles won their last two games while the Panthers lost their last two.

UPEI won the four encounters between the two teams this season, by close margin scores. Spectators should enjoy a very exciting series.

"Even if we lost all four games this season against the Panthers, we believe in our chances of winning the series," coach Denis Ross said. "We need to respect our systems and play well in all three zones. The Panthers have an excellent goaltender and we have need to place players in front of her and shoot pucks. Taking advantage of all our opportunities will be crucial and capitalizing on our chances will assure us a win."

Fourth year Gabrielle Forget will be in nets for the Aigles Bleues. She registered a shutout in her last outing.

"It will be important for us to win the first game on the road," Ross added. "If that is not the case, the second game will be even harder to win."

Team captain Karine Roy expects a very close series. "Their goaltender is strong and we need to find ways to score. This is a new season and our play around their net will be important. We are building on our last two wins to boost us in the playoffs."
