Hockey Aigles Bleus host Varsity Reds

With a renewed confidence following a 5-2 win on Wednesday, the Université de Moncton Aigles Bleus (10-14-1=21pts, 6th position) will host the University of New Brunswick Varsity Reds (19-2-3=41pts, 1st position), Saturday at 7 p.m. in an Atlantic University Sport men’s hockey game at the J.-Louis-Lévesque Arena.

It will be the fourth encounter between the two teams this season. The Varsity Reds have scored 27 goals in those first semester games, 9 per match, winning 9-2, 9-0 and 9-1. Coach Serge Bourgeois is confident that things will be different on Saturday.

"We are playing very good hockey lately," said Bourgeois. "We will focus on our game. I know we have had some difficulty playing against UNB, but we need to look at them as another team. Our work in the neutral zone will consist of slowing them and we will do better in our defensive zone. These are two important standings points for us as we try to get closer to UPEI and Saint Mary’s. The game in our nest with the backing of our fans should be different."

All players are available for play except defencemen Danick Emond, injured on Wednesday evening. Alexi Thibaudeau will be the goaltender. Moncton has five games left in regular schedule, including two at home, Saturday and Wednesday Feb. 8th, both against the Varsity Reds.

The fans will get a look at the five top AUS point getters, Philippe Maillet (20-22=42pts, 1st) of the Reds, Allain Saulnier (4-34=38pts, 2nd) and Jean-François Plante (27-10=37pts, 3rd) of the Aigles, Jordan Murray (11-23=34pts, 4th) of the Reds and Alex Saulnier (9-24=33pts, 5th), of the Aigles Bleus. The Reds have scored 119 goals in 24 games and have allowed 48. Moncton is 77 and 114.
