Université de Moncton saddened by passing of Jean-Guy Rioux

The Université de Moncton is saddened to learn of the passing of Jean-Guy Rioux who served as Vice-President of the university’s Shippagan campus from 1979 to 1990.

Mr. Rioux’s contribution to the development of the Canadian Francophonie at the international level was exceptional. Throughout his career, he participated in several missions to Japan, Germany, France and Mauritania to promote the products and expertise he represented. He was committed to seeing Acadian culture shine on the world scene.

“Mr. Rioux committed himself completely to the development of Acadie and its culture,” said Raymond Théberge, President and Vice-Chancellor of the Université de Moncton. “He was on the front lines of the founding of the Association des Amis du Centre universitaire de Shippagan (“Friends of the Shippagan University Centre Association”). His dedication led to his receiving several honours, including the Order of Canada, Order of New Brunswick, the Ordre des Palmes académiques (France), and the medal for cultural promotion provided by Renaissance française. The entire university community joins me in paying tribute to him.”

The Université de Moncton bestowed an honorary doctorate in social sciences upon Mr. Rioux in 2009 during Shippagan campus graduation ceremonies.

The Université de Moncton’s three campuses lowered their flags to half-mast until the day of the funeral.
