An evening with the sounds of composer Henry Purcell

The Université de Moncton’s Music Department Opera Workshop presents the opera DIDO & AENEAS by Henry Purcell on Saturday, January 28 at 7:30 pm and on Sunday, January 29 at 2 pm.

The Queen of Carthage, a Trojan prince, a sorceress, witches and spirits bring the classic love story of Queen Dido and warrior Aeneas on stage in this baroque opera by English composer, Henry Purcell. The opera is presented in its original English version, with French surtitles.

“Since this opera is only an hour long, it will be preceded by a series of performances highlighting the works of Purcell. We are proud to give our students the opportunity to perform a professional opera in front of an audience, accompanied by an orchestra” said Monette Gould, Musical Director of the Opera Workshop. She adds: “For a third year, maestro Tony Delgado has assembled an orchestra of students and professional musicians, which includes the Tutta Musica ensemble.”

“This production requires great acting skills in order for the students of the Music Department to play mythic characters”, said Director Philip André Collette. “They must draw from their own imagination to portray this tragic love story inspired by the Aeneid.”

Scenographer Sylvain Ward is already at work creating the sets. Lighting design is by Justin Gauvin and costume design by Kerri Warren. Annik Landry will not only assist the director but also cover stage direction. A 30-member choir will be on the Capitol stage.

Tickets are on sale at the Capitol Theatre Box Office (811 Main Street, Moncton). They can also be purchased by calling 506-856-4379 or 1-800-567-1922 or online, at www.capitol.nb.ca.
