Université de Moncton Salutes the Appointment of René Cormier to the Senate

Université de Moncton president and vice-chancellor Raymond Théberge wishes to congratulate René Cormier on his appointment as senator. He is a leader within the international Francophonie and an important player on the Acadian cultural scene.

“I am convinced that Mr. Cormier will very well represent the values of the Acadian people. The Francophonie as well as arts and culture are priorities for him. He has been standing out as a visionary for the development of the Acadian people for decades,” said the president and vice-chancellor.

He has a record as a professional in Canada’s arts and culture community. His work is anchored in his experience and in his life as a French-speaking New Brunswicker and in his vision for the development of Acadie.

Mr. Cormier has served as president of the Commission internationale du théâtre francophone, director of the Théâtre populaire d’Acadie, president of the Fédération culturelle canadienne-française and board member of the Canadian Conference of the Arts. He is currently the artistic director of Zones Théâtrales at the National Arts Centre and president of the Société Nationale de l’Acadie, the lead organization for the International Strategy for the Promotion of Acadian Artists.

Mr. Cormier is recognized for his ability to build bridges between often divided cultural groups. He has received awards for his contribution to the cultural sector from various organizations, including the Ordre des francophones d’Amérique. He is also a Knight of Arts and Letters of France.
