À quel moment un espace devient-il un lieu? Comment ce lieu est-il apprivoisé pour être transformé en monde intime? De quelle manière donnons-nous du sens à cette idée d’appartenance territoriale qui se forge une identité afin de voyager à l’intérieur et à l’extérieur de notre être? 

Un espace, un lieu, un monde intime regroupe des artistes qui laissent toute la place à l’espace, observent la formation et la délimitation du lieu et examinent l’occupation qui en résulte. Au moyen de techniques et de démarches diverses, les œuvres explorent la joie, la violence, la nostalgie et l’impermanence de la conception du lieu. L’exposition pose un regard sur les répercussions complexes, de nature politique, coloniale, économique ou sociale, que provoque l’aménagement de l’espace et du lieu.

Délimité par des frontières, le lieu est un récipient imaginaire où est entreposé notre patrimoine; procurant, de façon constante, un sentiment de sécurité et de quiétude. Ces notions, des concepts qui ne peuvent exister qu’en notre présence, tournoient et ondulent autour de nous. Se transformant dans le temps, elles retiennent et libèrent des particules. Quoique leur condition puisse être décrite comme étant solide et fixe (au contraire de la pierre qui fond au fil des millénaires et du bois poreux), se transformant au gré de nos souvenirs, en réalité leurs frontières sont perméables.

Du travail de conceptualisation à l’exploration de constructions réelles, cette exposition présente une variété de démarches et propose de découvrir l’expérimentation de ces artistes avec l’espace. L’ensemble permet de réfléchir à la création d’un lieu qui souvent débute et s’achève en soi. 

 

 

When does a space become a place? When does a place become a home? How do we attach meaning to these ideas of spatial belonging, and how do they form identities travelling inside and outside of ourselves?

Space, Place, Home is a group exhibition including artists who honour spaces, and who explore the formation and habitation of place. Inviting artists with diverse practices to investigate the joy, violence, nostalgia, and impermanence of place, this exhibition attempts to reconsider the complex political, colonial, economic, and social effects of space shaping.

Places are constructed boundaries; imaginary containers of culture and history, a false permanence of safety and security. These ideas move and undulate around our bodies, concepts only made real by our presence. They shift through time, holding and releasing particles. Languages can describe these states as if they are solid and unmoving, unlike porous wood and the millennial melting of stone, shifting and bending in memory, while their borders are disputed in reality.

Imagining ethereal conceptions, investigating real world constructions, and everything in between, this exhibition invites the exploration of these artists' practices and experimentation in space, and considers how places can begin and end with us.
