While doing physics experiments, I suddenly felt a conviction that, for all ways of observing objects, it is of utmost importance to identify carefully all the circumstances surrounding the appearance of a phenomenon and to aim to be as thorough as possible, because phenomena are often linked to one another, or interpenetrate and present themselves to the researcher in a sort of arrangement that manifests the inner life of the whole. - Goethe

It is possible to approach Christian Michaud’s work from the perspective that Goethe outlines: for Michaud, painting is a decidedly exploratory and experimental process, and he adopts a strategy of action painting that emphasizes the material quality of the pictorial surface. In addition to this, there is assembly where objects, devices, and gadgets join in the visual dynamics. These elements, either appropriated or made to measure, play a defining role in the work: they are often mechanized and create an experience of movement and rotation, even calling on the sense of hearing. The painted artwork, heavily pigmented, then becomes host to a subsystem of accessories incorporated by the artist. The role of these accessories is to animate the pictorial surface through their mechanical function.

Michaud’s works are modular in nature and can be seen as the breakdown of a whole throughout the gallery. Encompassing the exhibition space and the position of the elements, the work exists in the relationship between the pieces and contains the potential of unfolding differently. The whole crystallizes through an “arrangement that manifests the inner life of the whole” (Goethe).

The starting point of Auto sapiens is the realization that the invention of the automobile corresponds to a time of great importance in the history of painting: modernity. This exhibition therefore consists of a thematic and poetic exploration of automobilism. Michaud’s work thus proposes a sort of duality between the static/permanent and the mobile/ephemeral, while probing the expressive variabilities generated by the pictorial approach.
