Overview

The M.A. in Comparative Canadian Literature offers students the opportunity to investigate, at the graduate level, points of comparison and intercultural contact (historical, cultural, ideological, formal, or other) among the literatures of Canada written in English and French. Students enrolled in this program will gain a stronger understanding of Canadian cultures, society, and history, past and present.

Conditions of Admission

  • A B.A. (Hons.), specializing in English- or French-Canadian Literatures
  • A B.A., Major in English or French
  • A basic understanding of English- and French-Canadian literatures is required, and may be gained by taking certain qualifying courses prior to official acceptance into the program.
  • The ability to express oneself in English and French (oral and written) is required of all successful candidates. Linguistic proficiency will be determined by an oral interview and a writing sample.
  • Students must satisfy the University's general conditions of admission.

Other Requirements

Students accepted into the program will have the choice to write the thesis in English or French. A ten-page abstract, written in the other language, is also required.

(It is worth noting that the course titles for ANGL 6001 and ANGL 6002 are deliberately broad in order to enable professors' teaching them to adjust specific topics from one year to the next. The same number of credits in English (6) and in French (6) are required, regardless of the overall number of graduate courses offered in each department.)
