Sopinka Cup national competition.
Marilyne Gauvreau
, a fourth-year political science student at the Moncton
Campus, won the National Essay Competition sponsored by the Canadian
Study of Parliament Group. She won the competition based on a research
project she undertook during a course held during the fall semester. Her
essay focused on the candidacies of women in the 2010 New Brunswick
provincial election.
Two teams from the engineering faculty won first place in their respective
categories during the Atlantic Engineering Competition.The winning teams
were made up of

(senior design category), and

Hockey forwards
Dean Ouellet
of Saint-Hilaire and
Mariève Provost
of
Laval, Quebec, were chosen athletes of the year at the Moncton Campus.

of Dieppe and hockey player
Simon Lacroix
of Orleans, Ontario, received rookie of the year awards, while
Denis Ross
(women’s hockey) was named coach of the year.
The members of the Université de Moncton’s Right To Play organization
carried out a third humanitarian trip to Haiti.The 36 students offered
educational game workshops to more than 4,000 Haitian children in an
effort to combat poverty and illness, as well as promoting conflict resolution.
The equivalent of 5,000 lb of equipment was also distributed between 10
schools, orphanages and hospitals. Students also completed construction
of a school library as a microeconomic project in the community of Terrier
Rouge in the northern region of Haiti.
Our faculty stand out
Chantal Cadieux
, a professor of body language in the dramatic arts department and
the kinesiology and recreology department, received the Lieutenant-Governor’s
Award for High Achievement in Dance in recognition of her pioneering role and
contribution to the development and influence of dance in New Brunswick.
Marc Surette
, holder of the Canada Research Chair in Cellular Lipid Metabolism
in the chemistry and biochemistry department, received BioAtlantech’s New
Brunswick Biosciences Achievement Award. The award honours the exceptional
contribution of a New Brunswick biosciences specialist to the local or international
scientific community or for socioeconomic improvements through biosciences.
Gilles Robichaud
, assistant professor in the chemistry and biochemistry department,
received the most prestigious salary award for new researchers offered by the
Canadian Institutes for Health Research – $60,000 per year for a period of five
years. This awards program is offered to the country’s exceptional new researchers
as a financial contribution that will allow them to undertake and complete specific
health-related research.
Former New Brunswick lieutenant-governor
Herménégilde Chiasson
became
a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada for his contributions to the arts. His
candidacy was put forward by both the Université de Moncton, where he obtained
a bachelor of arts degree, and Mount Allison University, from where he received a
diploma in fine arts. Currently, he is an artist-in-residence at both institutions.
Law faculty dean
Odette Snow
was appointed Queen’s Counsel. The designation is
attributed to lawyers who are members of the Law Society of New Brunswick and
who have practised law for at least 15 years. As well, they must have significant
courtroom experience or have made an impact thanks to exceptional service to the
profession or the community.
Pianist
Roger Lord
, a professor in the music department, travelled to Melbourne,
Australia, where he served as chairman of an international jury for a major piano
competition – the Australian National Piano Award.
Roger Roy
, a registered professional forester and professor in the forestry faculty
at the Edmundston Campus, was named president of the Association of Registered
Professional Foresters of New Brunswick.
