General

Do you offer French courses for all levels?

We offer French courses for all linguistic levels. A placement test allows us to determine your level and to assign you to the appropriate group.

Is the city of Moncton safe?

Moncton, New Brunswick is one of the safest cities in Canada.

Is there parking on campus?

Yes, there is ample parking on campus. Passes are at your expense. They are available on a daily or monthly basis at the campus security office located in the Lefebvre residence building (room 001). To inquire about parking rates, call 506-858-4100 or visit: www.umoncton.ca/umcm-materielles/stationnement.

Is the Université de Moncton, located near stores, boutiques and supermarkets?

The university and residences are located within about a 20-minute walk to a shopping mall, restaurants, pharmacies and grocery stores.

How much extra money should I bring?

The following information will outline what is included and what is not included in the cost of the program or the bursary, in order to help you decide how much money to bring. The $375 registration and deposit fees are not included here since they must be paid in advance.

Included: Accommodations between July 3d, 2022, and Thursday evening August 4, 2022, course tuition and materials, workshops, some trips to cultural and tourist attractions, a food allowance of $120 per full week.

Not included: Travel to and from U de M campus to your place of residence, transportation in and around the city on your own time during the program, campus parking pass, accommodation of special diets, snacks and personal items, laundry, travel or health insurance, extra optional evening and weekend activities (costs vary from $15 - $100), use of the CEPS - sports, pool and gym facilities on your own time (available for $37/month or $12/visit). Any other expenses such as souvenirs are at your discretion.

International students must purchase medical insurance and obtain documents related to studying abroad.

 

Travel

Are travel costs included in the cost of the program?

Round-trip travel expenses from your place of residence to the Université de Moncton campus are your responsibility.

How do I get from the airport or bus and train station to the Université de Moncton (U de M) campus and how much does it cost?

A taxi will take you directly to the Université de Moncton campus for approximately $20.00 from the airport and $10.00 from the bus and train station. The costs of your trip to and from the university campus are your responsibility. Allow about 5 minutes travel time from the train and bus station and 10 minutes from the airport.

 

Admission and Registration Day

How will I know if I have been accepted into the Summer Immersion Program at U de M?

You will receive a reply from the Université de Moncton regarding your acceptance into the program.

What should I expect on registration day?

The program begins with registration day on July 3d, 2022, between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. at the Léopold-Taillon building (room 136) where you will receive the keys for your residence room and a laundry card. You will then have an opportunity to visit the residences and settle-in. A student gathering will take place at 7 p.m. as well as various activities so that students have an opportunity to get acquainted with each other.

Can I miss some class hours over the duration of the program?

According to the Explore program regulations, unexplained absence of three or more hours or an unexplained absence from a workshop that is two or more hours in length may result in expulsion from the program. Students of the Explore Program must submit justification in writing to the Program Coordinator.

Are there any special study materials I should acquire before my arrival?

A French-English dictionary is required and a verb conjugation book is optional. You can always purchase these study materials at the campus bookstore located at the Léopold-Taillon building.

 

Accommodations

Where will I be living during my stay at U de M?

All students of our Explore program stay at the Lafrance building, a co-ed residence located on campus.

Will I be sharing a room with another student?

All rooms are single-occupancy and the washrooms are private.

Are there laundry facilities in the residence?

Residences are equipped with washers and dryers and may be used at a cost of $1.75 for washers and $1.75 for dryers. You will receive a reloadable smart card to use the machines as they do not accept cash. The machines to load the smart cards are located in the student center. 

Is there a high-speed wireless internet connection in the room?

All rooms are equipped with a high-speed wireless internet connection (WI-FI).

Is there a telephone in the room?

There are no direct line telephones in the residence rooms. If you are a parent and wish to contact your child, please use the telephone number provided in the information package or contact housing services at 506-858-4015.

Are Interac machines available?

There are two ATMs on campus (National Bank and UNI), and they are located in the student center.

If I arrive before registration day or leave after the program ends, may I stay in the residence?

The program fees or bursary covers lodging from the evening of Friday, July 1st 2022, to Thursday, August 4, 2022, however, if possible, you should plan to arrive on registration day since our animators will be on duty. You will be required to leave your residence room before 11:00 a.m. on Friday.

If for reasons beyond your control you must arrive before or depart after those dates, please be advised that the summer housing service opens during the last week of May 2022. Any booking arrangements and costs related to extra nights of lodging are your responsibility. Please visit the Where you will stay section of our Web site for more information and to access the lodging request form.

You may obtain information and make your reservation either by telephone at 506-858-4015, or by email at logestival@umoncton.ca. The housing service will advise you of the cost of your stay.

 

Meals

Where will I be eating my meals?

A food allowance is provided and bus trips to a grocery store are organized every Monday. Your residence room is equipped with a kitchenette (mini-fridge, sink and microwave oven). Please plan to bring or purchase utensils and required dishes to prepare your meals. A cafeteria is located in the student center on campus. There is a wide selection of meals available including at least one vegetarian option daily.

Should I inform you of any allergies or dietary restrictions?

Yes, you must inform us of any allergies or dietary restrictions before the program starts. The information must be entered in Student Data Web form when you complete your registration.

 

Should I bring a laptop computer?

Feel free to bring a laptop computer with you. WI-FI service (wireless access) is available free of charge everywhere on campus. However, please take note of the following:

 1 – “Université de Moncton is not responsible for damage caused to the personal property of its tenants. Accordingly, it is strongly recommended that students acquire insurance coverage for their personal belongings.”

 2 – “Université de Moncton is not responsible for lost or stolen personal belongings. Your door must be kept locked at all times. It is strongly recommended that students acquire insurance coverage for their personal belongings.”

Please label all personal belongings.

May I bring my cell phone?

Cell phones cannot be used during courses, workshops or organized activities, except if you use it for other purposes related to the activity or lesson (ie: camera).

 

Visits, Days Off and Departure

Can my parents visit me during my stay at the Université?

There is a full program of planned activities on weekdays, including evenings. You will also need to plan time to study.  Saturday will also be a full day of activities (usually off campus). Sunday is the best day for a visit, or for going off-campus on your own.

When must I schedule my arrival and departure?

ARRIVAL: Participants are asked to make the necessary arrangements to arrive during the registration on Sunday, July 3d, 2022, between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. You will need to inform us of your arrival and departure information by filling the required Web form. It should be noted that the cafeteria will be open for supper on registration day.

If you arrive after 4 pm on registration day, you should go directly to the Lafrance residence building and our animators will register you and hand out your keys and laundry card. Keep in mind that there is a welcome meeting at 7 o'clock on Sunday evening.

DEPARTURE: It is very important that your departure is scheduled after the final exam on Friday, August 5, 2022, between 8 a.m. and 12 p.m.

Note that you will be required to leave your room before the exam. There will be a designated area to store your luggage until your departure. After the exam, prior to leaving the campus, you will be required to return your keys and laundry card in order to get your deposit refund at the Léopold-Taillon building, so it is recommended that you plan to leave the campus after 1:00 pm.

Any booking arrangements and costs related to extra nights of lodging prior to the evening of July 2d, 2022, and after the evening of Thursday, August 4, 2022, are your responsibility. The team of animators will be off duty at 4:30 p.m. on August 5, 2022.
